How to deal with a drop in SEO traffic?

Search engine optimization is the way of influencing a website’s online presence in a web search engine without any cost incurred, i.e. without any PPC campaign or paid advertisements. It is the most indigenous way of influencing visitors to flock a page and garner huge profits without paying anything. SEO activities are of two types, i.e. on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

The visitors who find the website genuinely using search engines, without the aid of pay per click ads and any influential marketing, is termed as Organic traffic which is the opposite of paid traffic. It is economical as the visitor has found the website at his discretion and the website won’t pay for his visit to the search engine as no one referred him.

The Google algorithm is stringent and tries to display only those ads which have placed a higher bid in the campaign. Mostly, the company doesn’t feel like investing in various paid methods to promote its webpage/website. It is then that an SEO algorithm is devised which is a process by which the content is adapted as per the search made by the user so that it shows up while some keywords are matched. It doesn’t guarantee maximum conversion for the page, but a well-planned page might find a top shelf in the search engine on the sole basis of its content. At times when we type something on the search bar of the search engine, a list of results is displayed in context to what has been typed, which is called the search engine results page, i.e. SERP. The SEO is like life to SERP, to display one’s website higher on the SERP, one needs to employ SEO.

An organization that has been using SEO might face a substantial Google search traffic drop in SEO traffic due to some reasons. Various steps can help with dealing in a drop in SEO and regain the earlier position on the SERP:

  • Simplicity is the key

It’s always to prioritize the things first while planning to rank the website on the SERP. Try to focus on advanced tactics to get the SEO-optimization. Like if the website is delivering a 200 status code or not in case of a drop of organic visitors or the link velocity has plummeted substantially. The 200 status code is a certification vouching for the successful communication with the website when contacted with an HTTP request.

One must also check the successful flux of bots on the website. They are text files located on the top-level directory and instruct recipient bots about interaction with the website. It might be possible that the bot interaction on the page might have been turned off by Google; hence it needs to be checked.

  • Check for Google penalty

Google has its way of penalizing web pages which cause rankings to drop low, and it might happen any moment. If the rank has dropped by double digits, then it could be a Google penalty. There can be two types of penalties namely:

    • Manual- assigned by an employee working.
    • Algorithmic-automatically updated with severe SEO traffic drops.

Google Algorithm is unpredictable, and updates are mostly uncalled for hence one must keep an eye on the penalties in case the Google search traffic drop is severe. It might also occur that the website might stay at a stable rank in another search engine while descending only in Google which can be evidence of Google penalty.

  • Google search console study

As discussed above, the Google algorithm is unpredictable even though they mention the aspect of the website and their demand from each website to deliver. In case the guidelines are not followed, penalties levied can be rigid and following rules always makes the website to earn a good reputation. One service of Google is its offering of a search console which is free of cost and monitors the website’s availability in various result pages along with providing optimization solutions and a track on a major chunk of visitors on the site. There might be certain errors like:

    • Server Error
    • DNS error
    • URL error

They all can be efficiently resolved using Google Search Console.

  • Proper indexing of content

There might be a chance that the administrator of the website is indexing various pages associated with the site but reduces the amount of content offered to the public. In such a case, Google pulls down the website from the higher ranking because it promotes the idea of high-quality content and doesn’t compromise with that. One must bring information from credible sources to raise the site’s credibility. The website content can be made more engaging by providing real-life experiences and insights to the brand along with proper stats and information about why the customer should believe that the website they are looking at is better than its peers. And at the end, the content self-produced is always promoted because it won’t hold similarity with other pieces available.

One must also keep in mind, additional pages pull-down rankings too, and for keeping the data significant, only the pages that can truly contribute to the SERP should be hosted on the website.

  • Competitor overtook the ranking

In maximum cases, this point seems to be the major problem as the competitor site takes hold of the ranking and similar peer websites will continue sailing on the same rank with a slight decrease on the respected website.

In such cases, more and more quality content should be brought in along with investing in better campaigns that make you stand out of your league and let your website speak for you that why you should be visited. One should never underestimate its competitor, and constant monitoring should be practiced. It will give a scope of improvement in case the progress on their side is gradual.

In the end, good content with the overall management of the website with essential keywords shall always help one to stay in the competition for a significant time.
